鄙事（ひじ）に多能なりき少年の日は　立身して自（みずか）ら笑う却って身を壊（やぶ）るを　浴余閑坐して肌は全く浄（きよ）し　曾て是れ綿糸もて瘃（あかぎれ）を縫いし人（以下小字）諭吉は少小にして母に事えて家事を執り園に灌ぎ薪を採り凡百の力役為さざる所無し。冬の日に或は手足に皹瘃（あかぎれ）を生じ疼痛に堪えざるもの有らば則ち綿糸もて瘃裂の創口を縫いて灌ぐに熱油を以てす。創も亦輙（すなわ）ち癒ゆ。当時身体の屈強なること知る可し。今は則ち然らず。頃日浴後偶（たまた）ま感を記す。

慶應義塾は単に一所の学塾として自から甘んずるを得ず。其目的は我日本国中に於ける気品の泉源、智徳の模範たらんことを期し、之を実際にしては居家、処世、立国の本旨を明にして、之を口に言うのみにあらず、躬行（きゅうこう）実践、以て全社会の先導者たらんことを欲するものなり。　以上は曾て人に語りし所の一節なり　福沢諭吉書 ※明治29年11月1日開催の慶應義塾旧友会における演説の一節。その演説は同年11月3日の時事新報紙上に社説として掲載された。慶應義塾では、この文章を「慶應義塾之目的」と称している。
