『博物学講座』：（12）ワニザメ ここでは古代人にはタンタロスとして知られ、いまどきのドイツの中学校の理科の先生なんぞに言わせりゃ文無しの美食家だっていう、ワニザメの変種で我慢してもらわなけりゃいけない。この大食らいのクジラみたいな生き物は、食料品屋のあるとこには必ずといっていいほど、うようよしているのが見かけられる。歯はとんがっていて、長いこと使わないでいるため伸び放題、というのも、目ばっかりで物をむさぼり食らうからなんだ。これと思う獲物の前で日がな一日じいっと動かずにいるという不屈の努力を重ねたあかつきには、ときに首筋をちがえるという幸運に見舞われ、その日を終えることもあるという。欲望と希望の空費で自らを養っているので、目をみはるばかりに痩せ細っている。大海原を泳いでいるその種のほかの魚とはまったく異なり、この種のワニザメはいつも乾いたところにいる
『中国を旅すれば』：（1）上陸 中国の港に上陸する旅行者はだれでも、たちまち悪党みたいに、興味津々といった感じで左右に立ち並んでいる人垣の間を入国管理局へ引っ立てられていく。そしてこの天子の国土に触れるか触れないかのうちに、手荷物運搬人やホテルのボーイや通訳や使いっ走りや、その他もろもろの中国官憲お墨つきの追剥ぎどもの餌食になっちゃう
『偏執狂』：（7）気で病む男 このようなたぐいの市民は医者の幸運であり薬局の恵みであり、白からし、パラグアイ・ルー、ルニョーの練り薬、クルソの丸薬、そして無痛の人間を和らげるすべての発明の着想を与えたのはニンフのエゲリアである。気で病む男は胸膜炎、肺結核などなどに代わるがわる身を捧げる。彼はさまざまな娯楽を楽しむために病をつぎつぎと変え、そして毎日、自分の脈を取りながら叫んでいる。「私は本当にすべての病気に立ち向かえるように不屈の健康でいなくっちゃ」と
『中国を旅すれば』：（5）中国の法律 中国の法廷弁護士は猛烈にがんばる、目も綾な、やけにたくさんの雄弁な身振りをして、一方、治安判事のほうは、被告側のしぐさに心をかき乱されたり自分の論点を見失ったりしないように、たいがいなにか手仕事に耽ってる。小刀で机に刻み目をつけてる者もいれば、捺印された書類に下手っぴぃな小っちゃい人物画を描いてたり、折り紙でニワトリをこしらえてたりする者もいる。他の人たちはもっといい奥の手を使ってて、目を閉じて深い瞑想へのめり込んでる、こうなると廷吏が「静粛に！」って力いっぱい喚いて、みんなをそこから引きずり出すのにひどく苦労するはめになる・・・てなわけで、中国の正義は目隠しした姿に描かれるんだって
